Bundle math
starter = eave+rake length ÷ 100 ft per bundle · ridge caps = ridge+hip ÷ 33 ft
1,500 sq ft of surface in architectural shingles with 10% waste is 50 bundles — about 3,500 lb of material. If you only know your house footprint and pitch, get the surface area from the roofing calculator first; it feeds straight into this page.

Ordering notes
- Match lot numbers: shingle color varies between production runs — confirm all pallets share a lot number.
- Keep 1–2 spare bundles after the job for future storm repairs in matching color.
- Steep roofs cost more to install: anything over 8/12 usually adds a labor premium — check yours with the roof pitch calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How many square feet does a bundle of shingles cover?+
A bundle of standard architectural shingles covers 33.3 square feet — three bundles per roofing square (100 sq ft). Heavier designer shingles can run 4 or even 5 bundles per square, so check the wrapper.
How many bundles of shingles do I need for a 1,500 sq ft roof?+
Forty-five bundles before waste (1,500 ÷ 33.3), and 50 bundles with a typical 10% waste factor. Note that is 1,500 sq ft of roof surface, not house floor area — sloped roofs have more surface than footprint.
How much does a bundle of shingles weigh?+
Architectural shingle bundles weigh 60–80 lb. Loading a pallet of 45 bundles means moving about 1.5 tons — have the supplier boom them onto the roof if possible; it is usually a small fee and saves your ladder trips.
What are starter strips and do I need them?+
Starter strips are pre-cut shingle bases that run along eaves and rakes, sealing the first course against wind lift. One starter bundle covers about 100–105 linear feet. Cutting tabs off field shingles works but wastes material and voids some warranties.
How many ridge cap shingles do I need?+
Ridge caps cover about 33 linear feet per bundle at standard exposure. Total your ridge and hip lengths and divide — a simple gable roof has one ridge; hip roofs add all four hip runs.
